New File
This is the file Erica and I worked on this afternoon. I stayed a little longer after Erica left and Kyle helped us solved the problem -- the claw can't grab without smashing the object...
So.. now the claw drops down open automatically (with magnet sensors). It will stop at the position ready to grab the object. The players' job is to grab both side of the claw at the same time to get it close (Kyle made a new set of logic machine to get it work). Once the object is inside of the claw, the players need to go back up to the button to lift the claw up.
Greg.. I know the description above makes no sense to you... sorry about that. It's kinda hard to explain here. Erica and I will show you tomorrow! :)

LBP workshop
So the LBP workshop is designed to allow users to show off their creations and teach other users how to make stuff. It's somewhat successful in that way; the comments show users really getting into the work, and some people post lots of videos of their own stuff. That said, the interface doesn't really allow for a lot of differentiation (ie, what if I'm a beginner and just want to know how switches work? or, an advanced user who wants to learn something really sophisticated?), so it's hard to find what I'm looking for. It's not easily searchable, and I want the tags to let me see content (ie, switches) and not just categories (ie, 'characters.') It seems very successful in the Look-At-My-Cool-Stuff kind of way, and I got pretty inspired by looking through it, but it doesn't seem very useful in the tutorial sense.

Some thoughts...
We didn't really get to reflect on Tuesday's class, but I was pleasantly surprised by where we were in the grand scheme of things. Which is to say that a lot of people had busted-ass levels that were way, way too hard. Any way, I really had fun working with you two. You both have really good ideas and I thought we tackled what we could well.
Have a great break.

saved...
I got the save off the machine, so we're all good. I'm gonna start working at 6 in the 11 floor and we can either stay there or go uptown, whichever you guys prefer.
let me know.
let me know.
Tonight
So, as I mentioned, we have access to the PS3 at my in-laws apartment so we can look over what we've got and decide how to spend our last night on this level before player testing. I'm not, sure, but it sounds like we won't really have to go super huge tonight. Maybe just a few hours.
I'm in class until 5:40. We can meet at the apartment anytime after that. Maybe we should say like 7:30 or 8?
We are at 1 West 64th street. That's at the corner on 64th and Central Park West. You'll enter the building on 64th street and just tell the doorman you're going up the the Laybourne's apartment (11A).
Let me know if this works for you and have a nice day.

welll..
The final phrase (read: mine) is a table. Cute tablecloth (kinda), a large glass bowl to catch the pieces of [?] that will be emitted from Erica's phase, a jetpack that allows sackboy to collect these pieces and deposit them in a soup bowl. Things that need to be resolved: The general aesthetic - we still don't have a background for the kitchen, though we do have the props (pots/pans, etc) and the math. I don't know how to trigger the ratio requirement for mine (ie, drop in 3 pieces of chicken and 2 pieces of shrimp).
I thought I saved the level on my flash drive - Kyle was there while I did it! - but I'm not seeing it on there. Erica and I were working today on the PS3 by the door, and I checked to make sure that it saved locally before I left. Crossing my fingers.

Update
Link to the latest PS3 save.
So, there's a chance that the work that I did today didn't save properly. I thought it was all good and as I was uploading it to this post, I realized that the dates are the same from the save that Greg gave me this morning. Let's hope I'm wrong and if I'm not, I'll just rebuild it tomorrow. Also, just a heads up, another group had a save issue yesterday on the machine that Lee and Baxter are at, so beware of that one.
I'll be in either tomorrow or sat for sure to work on it.

YAY Ratios
so here are the final numbers for the chicken to shrimp to carrots.
1 chicken = 1.5 shrimp = 3 carrots
4 chicks = 4lbs (possible hint)
3 shrimp = 2 lbs
2 carrots = 2/3 lbs
total 9 items = 6 2/3 lbs
Then, possibly for the last section- in 3 different bowls - using the total amount of pieces and having to split them up appropriately for each bowl, depending on serving sizes. Somehow incorporating the flames in between the bowls?

Save from today (thursday)
Link to the latest PS3 save. I got a chef in there and worked on the chopping/something machine- not sure where it's going. as of today, there's a conveyor belt that goes through this "machine" and out comes the pieces of the chicken. ha. I'll be back in tomorrow afternoon to work on it some more.

Wed. night new save
I did a bit of work on our shrimp, made a version 2 chicken that, if I'm being perfectly honest, is my best work ever... ever. I decided that it might be funnier to have decapitated chickens running around, so I made a headless chicken with a bloody bone stump sticking out from the neck. I may have to retire after tonight, there's just no where to go from here. I also did the farmer for the beginning section. The latest and greatest chickens are at AKM/main. The farmer is at AKM/gp.
Any way here is the new save PS3.

shrimp in da hiz-ouse
got the shrimp working. Who is working next? I can work wed night and thurs. afternoon. Here is the link to the save PS3. If you click it, the zip file should just download to you computer. Have fun.
Notes on Kitchen 1
- Greeted by chef who gives recipe
- Blender/Slicer: 'acme' factory / tubes/ funnels that use the emitter
(how much of the mechanics do we hide during the play through)
reference: charlie and the chocolate facotry
- Possibly use a Dumbwaiter as an elevator mechanic
- How to design a mechanism that understand when the "3/4" measurement is satisfied??

For Tuesday
<---- They are chasing a chicken for gumbo. I kid you not. Apparently this is a thing. Did you know this? I didn't. Excerpt: "Some degree of inebriation is permissible and even desirable,'' a permanent exhibit on Cajun Mardi Gras at the Louisiana State Museum notes soberly about the courir, which locals nickname the "chicken run.'' Greg, this is all you. I'd also suggest reading the wiki articles on Cajun and gumbo, if you guys aren't up on those things.Moving Erica's comment about the tags/one-sentence here, let's start working that out.
I like your suggestions for tags: cooking, fractions, measurements, farm, kitchen. Maybe add Cajun or gumbo or Mardi Gras as well, for the aesthetic. That said, I'm bad at tags (delicious doesn't work so well for me), so I'll leave those up to you guys.
One-sentence starter (I like the recipe idea): Chef Sackboy needs your help with gathering ingredients and preparing his delicious Cajun gumbo, but follow his recipe carefully - your miscalculations will be deadly!
miscalculations? eh? like that? Also, name of the level: Chez Sackboy..
We also need to identify our design principles for Tuesday. To start:
1) Designing a fun activity is more important to us than explicit teaching.
2) Cooking is a fun activity, and can be used to reinforce fractions skills.
3) LBP allows us to measure ingredients and chase chickens in a way that a conventional classroom does not.

Sweet.
The kitchen motif looks awesome, can't wait to see it. By the way, Christina, in order to zip a folder, just control-click it and select compress form the pop up menu. It looks like the save data will have to be zipped in order for us to share it this way.
I've started some playing around with robot chickens. They're awesome. I hope to play tomorrow night.

Chopper/Slicer
I couldn't download the zip file so I just played a little and thought about the chopping machine. Working on the mechanics on paper, here are 2 options for mechanices - working on another version with fast rotating knives.

Update.
Few things. Zip, I don't know. I put it on the a server. I hope this works. URL, here.
Also, I'm using this as a reference for the kitchen.
After 2.5 hours of LBP work today, I made exactly one pot (pot looks awesome), one pan (not bad), a set of knives in a wood block, one fireplace (also not bad - for the dirty/smokey look, find either the transparent black sticker or the fingerprint stickers. These are good), and one terrrrible pot/fire combination. Anyway, check it out if you want. I wasn't good at keeping track of scale - the fireplace is way too big for sackboy to see if he's running on the ground. Also, my knives take up three depth levels, so sackboy can't get by. This is unfortunate and I don't know how to fix that yet.
until we meet again -
(and thanks, greg, for making sure our save saved.)

Geometry Problems/Examples
Here's what I got so far...
link1
(and http://www.edhelper.com/math/math_sixth_grade_SIX47.htm)
easy area problems that unlock the picture/key to the next problem, the next problem itself, or even the formula/hint for the next problem
link2
http://www.edhelper.com/math/geometry111.htm
http://www.edhelper.com/math/geometry202.htm
similar to the problem we talked about (the circle in the square area); area of polygons
http://www.mcwdn.org/Geometry/Area.html
has a simple animation that demonstrates how to find the area: maybe a good starting point?
http://library.thinkquest.org/20991/geo/solids.html#area
area of prisms
">link3
this site has more advanced problems (more for hs math), but may be able to use the different combination of shapes for our examples
